DeBlinkerdAsked Hilde Van Gelder some questions:
What’s your favourite anchorage bay?/ What’s your favourite knot?
My favorite knot is the bowline hitch. It is superstrong, yet very easy to disentangle: magic!
Why did you opt for working with De Blinkerd?
The earlier collaboration with Othillia and Romy for their nautical chart Dover and Calais to Dunkerque and Ramsgate (2021) had been a real pleasure. When the opportunity presented itself to expand De Blinkerd’s collection of postcards in the form of a leporello including a selection of three photographs from my Ground Sea book, I did not hesitate for a second. … / … is a silent work that breathes a subdued mood. I am grateful to De Blinkerd for having given me the chance to create this pense-bête.
What are your influences?
The immediate influence for … / … was Peter Downsbrough’s wonderful leporello for De Blinkerd Editions, 9 VIEWS (2021). On a more fundamental level, Allan Sekula’s Deep Six / Passer au bleu (1996/1998) has been the principal source of inspiration for … / … . Although … / … concludes a long-lasting dialogue with Deep Six / Passer au bleu (as developed in my Ground Sea book), its wordless title indicates that the conversation somehow will continue beyond written words – somewhere in the creative realm of the speechless.
