ST MARGARET’S BAY

A PORTFOLIO BY PETER DOWNSBROUGH

De Blinkerd Editions is pleased to present ST MARGARET’S BAY (2021), a portfolio by Peter Downsbrough. Published in an edition of fifteen (twelve + 2 AP and 1 EP), this dark grey handmade box with an embossed title, ST MARGARET’S BAY, contains ten black and white gelatin silver prints.

All photographs were taken by the artist on the same day in 2007 during a trip to St Margaret’s Bay, Kent. These liminal pictures, weaving abstracted with more figurative forms of representation, display a zone where the “cosmic” energies of land and water meet. With their focus on signs, proportions, and lines, the images provide a perfect summary of Peter Downsbrough’s enigmatic artistic universe. They visualize an intriguing tension between the eroded remnants of human interventions and the potentially alarming absence of any living beings.

Thus, ST MARGARET’S BAY subtly offers a more-than-human perspective on everyday reality near the white Cliffs of Dover. In this way, Peter Downsbrough turns ST MARGARET’S BAY into a fictional heterotopic entity, serving as a catalyst within a thought experiment that the viewer is invited to perform.
